Council adopts FY2027 budget with capital spending and new positions

The council voted to adopt the FY2027 budget after a public hearing and staff presentation of highlights. Finance staff said the budget includes $71 million in capital projects, 26 new positions and total revenue budgeted at roughly $171 million. "Included in our fiscal year 2027 budget, we also have 71,000,000 in capital projects and we've added 26 new positions," the finance director said.
The presentation listed capital spending concentrated in sewer, fire, streets, water and parks and noted compensation adjustments for police sergeants and below ($2 per hour) and a citywide COLA of $0.85 per hour for other employees. The total property tax levied was cited as $35,708,191 including bond levies. Councilor Tillman moved to sponsor the ordinance adopting the budget; the motion carried on roll call.
Council members thanked staff for an extensive budget season and said they recognized the work that went into assembling the package. Staff noted some figures and line-item projections are conservative estimates and that adoption allows departments to proceed with planned capital projects and personnel hires.
