The South Sanpete board voted to adopt changes to policy JGB, which governs student use of cell phones, personal electronic devices and emerging technologies such as AI glasses.
Staff explained the policy aligns with recent state legislative changes and uses the concepts of open vs closed campus and "bell‑to‑bell" instructional time to limit device use during instruction. "Students may not use our district provided electronic device or equipment through the district of educational services to access inappropriate matter," staff said while describing content filters and parental monitoring tools the district will make available.
Board members extensively debated enforceability, teacher training and uniformity across buildings. Several members warned allowing device use during transitions or lunchtime can undermine enforcement and suggested starting with a more restrictive rule and training teachers and administrators to apply the policy consistently. Staff said principals and faculty were consulted and the district will provide guidance to buildings and monitor implementation, with the option to revise the policy if practical problems arise.
The motion to approve the policy passed with board members voting in favor and one oppose recorded during the roll call. The board directed staff to emphasize faculty training and to return to the board if significant implementation challenges emerge.
