Trevor reported the district doubled use of the Waterford Upstart preschool readiness program this year, calling it a promising step to prepare children for kindergarten.
"We more than doubled that this last year with the number of users up to a 137," Trevor said, noting the district had 66 users in the 02/24–25 period and grew participation through flyers, preschool partnerships, county reading coalition outreach, radio and newspaper placements.
Trevor and other staff explained the program is free to parents; the district receives some federal funding to support Upstart and hires recruiters to sign families up. Staff said qualifying families can receive devices or internet reimbursement through the program and that outreach continues for families the district doesn't already contact directly.
Board members discussed how best to make the flyer and registration information available to all families with incoming kindergarten students, and staff said they will keep promoting the program through schools, libraries and community partners.
