The North Merrick Union Free School District board used its December meeting to honor Mr. Merrims, principal of Harold D. Fayette School, who will retire effective Jan. 5. Agency official (speaker 2) described Mr. Merrims as "a truly remarkable educator, leader, and colleague" whose presence touched classrooms, hallways and community events across the district.
"It is both an honor and a privilege to be here tonight as we celebrate a truly remarkable educator, leader, and colleague, mister Howard Merrims," the speaker said, listing more than 20 years of service and calling out his daily visibility and family connections at school. Multiple board members and attendees offered tribute remarks noting his mentorship of staff, long-running morning announcements and community traditions. The board indicated it will accept his resignation for the purpose of retirement, effective Jan. 5.
The meeting also included lighthearted requests that Mr. Merrims continue traditions — including dressing up for Halloween — and an extended round of applause from board members and community representatives.
