Russ Cohen introduced the handbook as an effort to "establish consistent expectations, procedures, and standards for all the athletic programs," covering VHSL compliance, emergency action plans, concussion and sudden-cardiac procedures, and communications protocols. Board members raised editorial and substantive concerns — typographical fixes, page-number issues, whether references to an athletic trainer were appropriate when the district currently has no trainer, and how interim grade checks should be enforced. "If we're telling coaches to check grades, it doesn't say what they're checking for," one board member said, urging concrete GPA or grade-cutoff language. Another member urged any new academic eligibility rules be applied across all extracurricular activities to avoid singling out athletes.
The board approved the manual as amended by motion (moved by mister Christian; seconded by mister Snoddy) and directed staff to convene stakeholders and add a clear student‑athlete academic policy for subsequent adoption.
