County authorizes application for Safe Streets for All planning grant estimated at $250,000

Derek, an engineering department staff member, briefed the commission on the Safe Streets for All planning grant and recommended the county apply. He described the program as a federal planning award that would fund a county road safety action plan and said the planning grant is estimated at about $250,000; the county would be required to provide a 20% local match if the grant is awarded.

"250,000 is what we estimate," Derek said when asked about the maximum award. Derek added that the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission will submit the initial application on the county’s behalf for no fee, and that subsequent project grant applications could carry small consultant fees. The commission voted to authorize staff to pursue the grant application; the authorization obligates staff to identify the local match if the county is selected for the planning grant.
