Board votes 3–2 to advance planning for athletic complex after divided public hearing

The Colman‑Egan School District board voted 3–2 to move forward with planning work on a proposed athletic complex after a public hearing that drew both strong support and opposition from residents. The board added the item to the agenda and approved a motion to consider moving forward; a formal vote is scheduled for Dec. 8.

Public commenters voiced contrasting views. Jim McGuire, who described himself as neither for nor against the project, urged the district to seek a site where growth is occurring rather than building next to established homes: "Why don't you go where there's gonna be some growth? Leave the community alone." By contrast, newcomer Sean Geigley, a parent and coach, said the complex would benefit athletes and improve safety and training opportunities for students who currently travel elsewhere to practice. An opponent warned the project could cost substantially more than estimated, raised floodplain and insurance concerns for the eastern site, and said he would pursue signatures to force a referendum.

Board and staff members emphasized the process and financing questions raised during the hearing. Staff presented survey results showing 56% favorable responses, and explained that the district expects to ask for less than the statutory 1.5% threshold that would automatically require a referendum but is holding the hearing for transparency. The board's vote to proceed authorizes further planning steps but does not commit the district to final construction; the next substantive vote is set for Dec. 8.
