Staff reports: births, immunizations, new testing and outreach plans

Jackie, the department data manager, presented July vital statistics to the board: 320 births in the month, with 262 Warrick County residents; by county, Vanderburgh had 136 births while Warrick County had 47. Jackie also reported 93 deaths in July and noted the most common causes as cancer, cardiac arrest, dementia/Alzheimer's and pneumonia.

Dr. Kari and staff reported that back-to-school vaccine clinics on July 7 and July 21 were fully booked and appointment demand has increased. Staff plan additional vaccine clinics the first Saturdays in October and November and will coordinate dates with the school corporation. Dr. Kari also said staff met with state leaders to prepare for STD testing and treatment to be provided through the health department; providers must complete online training and state enrollment is required to dispense free medications, with an expected start of free medication distribution Jan. 1.

On community outreach, staff announced World First Aid Day on Sept. 12 with food trucks, an inflatable, helicopter and participation by the sheriff's department and local fire departments; Ascension donated teddy bears and small first-aid kits for distribution. The department is partnering with Ohio Township and the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive in honor of Gentry Pace on Sept. 20.

Next steps: staff will finalize clinic dates with schools, continue provider training for STD services and coordinate outreach for upcoming community events.
