Oxford Academy reports mixed NYS test results; district to appeal 'School in Need of Improvement' designation

Superintendent Nicholas A. Colosi told the Oxford Academy and Central School Board of Education on Dec. 2 that "the district received State notification of state designation" after one group failed to meet growth expectations; the district plans to file an appeal and review programs and supports tied to the designation.
Primary School Principal Michelle Hardler reviewed third- and fourth-grade NYS English and math results, saying third-grade outcomes were near regional averages but below the state and fourth-grade scores were low statewide; she attributed part of the decline to teachers not being able to cover all new curriculum content and to several parents opting their children out of exams. Middle School Principal Greg Lehr said grades 5–8 performed above regional and state scores in most subjects and were the highest in several years, though 8th-grade science lagged after the state introduced a new exam and the district has been unable to hire a certified science teacher. Lehr noted fifth-grade science results have not yet been released.
District leaders said the designation triggers an appeal process; if the appeal is unsuccessful, the district will inventory needs and seek additional state funds to implement growth supports. Board members heard this update as part of regular reports; the meeting record shows no final corrective plan was adopted that night.
