Board hears of multiple open teaching positions amid recruitment push

"We currently have 5 special ed positions," the staff member said. Board members discussed limiting internal transfers during the year except for extenuating circumstances to avoid opening additional vacancies.
District staff described outreach plans to Davidson College and West Virginia Wesleyan to recruit graduates and noted mixed success with earlier outreach to local teacher-preparation programs. On substitute coverage, staff said many substitutes are retired teachers who are often unwilling to accept long-term assignments; the district reported contingency plans and volunteer coverage for the start of school.
