Board discusses policy after coach resignation led to combining 7th‑ and 8th‑grade teams
Summary
The board debated Policy 7410 after a last‑minute coach resignation and low enrollment prompted combining 7th‑ and 8th‑grade teams. The superintendent said the move preserved playing time; the board asked the policy committee to clarify notice and approval procedures.

Members of the Oyster Bay‑East Norwich school board discussed whether Policy 7410 requires board approval when middle‑school teams are combined due to low enrollment or a sudden coach resignation.
"The coach resigned, literally 2, 3 days before the beginning of the season," Superintendent Dr. Yanni said, explaining the administration's decision to combine the 7th‑ and 8th‑grade teams to ensure playing time rather than eliminate a squad. Board members expressed concern about when the board should be notified and whether formal approval is required even for a combination driven by staffing or enrollment.
One board member told the superintendent they would like notice in order to recruit additional players and avoid combining grades: "If we approve a team, I think it would be good to know if that team would not be running," the member said. The board agreed to ask the policy committee to review Policy 7410 for language addressing last‑minute resignations and low‑enrollment scenarios and to consider confidential‑packet notification for between‑meeting decisions.
No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; the superintendent said he would notify the board when changes occur between meetings and will bring a resolution if needed.
