A presenter explained the tutoring model for early literacy: “It's 30 minutes 3 times a week, and they are on a computer with some headphones with a microphone,” and said tutors receive ongoing training and monitoring. The district will start with targeted groups (for example, 20 third graders at McGovern) and use screening assessments to place students. The tutors provide frequent progress reports to classroom teachers and the program is intended to supplement, not replace, existing small‑group instruction.
Separately, staff asked the board to review the WDSD service plan that covers special education and other shared services for the coming year. Chair and staff said a resolution to adopt the plan will be placed on the February agenda for board action.
