Superintendent (speaker 1) told the board the district received formal strike notice from the Coquille Education Association and the union's attorney.
"They are intending to strike on June 3 at 6AM," he said, and added that the district has requested a joint mediation session with the Employment Relations Board and accepted a mediation date of May 30. The district is awaiting confirmation from the association on that mediation date.
The superintendent said the district's attorney advised sending a survey to all staff to determine who would be available to work on June 3 if a strike proceeds, and that the district is exploring contingency options including keeping some buildings open. He said staff will have until the legal deadline to respond to the availability survey.
Board members asked how a strike on June 3 would affect end-of-year events and the school calendar. The superintendent said the district is studying all options to preserve students'end-of-year activities if possible but conceded that operational decisions will depend on staff responses to the survey and the outcome of mediation.
The district moved the negotiations matter into the executive-session agenda for deliberations and legal counsel to consult on next steps.
