Schools to pause some programs, freeze PD and leave three secondary posts vacant to reduce shortfall

Superintendent Kevin Sears outlined specific program and personnel steps the school board has approved or is considering to generate carryover and limit instructional impacts. Among the measures already approved were not filling three secondary teaching positions for the second semester (Sears estimated about $100,000 in savings), limiting summer-school scope, and freezing professional-development spending through June 30 except for already-paid items.

Sears said out-of-county field trips must be funded from sources other than local funds and that tutors and some summer-work will be funded by federal or grant sources (Title I/PIR) where applicable. The school board discussed, but did not immediately approve, suspending the DSIP program (which pays retired teachers at daily rates to substitute) and eliminating two grant-funded positions if further reductions are necessary. Several supervisors voiced concern that administrative restructuring appeared to protect administrative roles while classroom staff and bus drivers have taken on additional duties.

Supervisor Mike Merritt asked why administrative roles had been restructured while classroom personnel and support staff were asked to absorb cuts; Sears said the restructuring did not create net-new positions and that total positions were lower than in 2023. The board continues to evaluate additional options if the remediation timeline or reimbursement outcomes change.
