Board advances student-representative policy draft despite calls to pause

The Revere Local Board of Education reviewed a draft policy on Aug. 11 that would create a student representative role, with the administration sharing a timeline for review and possible adoption.

The chair summarized feedback gathered since the proposal's introduction in May, saying the responses showed support for the leadership and educational value of a student rep but asked for parental consent and equal-access selection safeguards. "The feedback submitted included support for the leadership development opportunity and educational value, a strong desire for parental consent to be required for application," the chair said, and outside counsel drafted the policy language for board review.

A board member asked whether the board should pause the process after some parents said they had only just learned of the proposal. "Has there been any consideration to pause as we've requested?" the member asked, noting several requests from board members and parental concern. The chair replied that the policy was first introduced in May, has been discussed monthly and that "there's absolutely further time for conversation at the next work session during that policy review and then during a vote," but indicated the board would continue moving forward with the posted timeline.

Under the tentative schedule presented on Aug. 11, the board will review the drafted policy at the Sept. work session, hold a first reading at the Sept. board meeting and a second reading and vote in October; if approved, selection of a student representative would begin in November to allow the student to serve from the organizational meeting through May. The administration said the draft had been prepared with input from the board attorney and outside counsel and would be publicly shared before readings so parents can review materials in advance.
