Board amends standing order so Narcan is not required to be kept in a double-locked nurse cabinet
Summary
Trustee Mrs Booth successfully moved to remove a line requiring Narcan to 'always be stored in a double locked cabinet in the nurse's office,' arguing it limited emergency access at after-hours events; the board accepted the amendment after discussion of staff training and liability concerns.

Board member Mrs Booth moved to strike a line in the standing orders that read: "This medication will always be stored in a double locked cabinet in the nurse's office," saying that practice could impede emergency response during athletic events or after-hours activities. "This will then allow the nurses and the professionals to make proper decision for where this should be stored so that it's easily accessible in an emergency, and the board will not be tying their hands," Mrs Booth said during the discussion.
Trustees discussed training and liability; the record indicates nursing staff are trained and officers and athletic trainers also carry naloxone in some settings. A trustee asked whether the district solicitor had reviewed the change; trustees were told nursing staff is trained and that cross-references would be made to the sports doctor and trainers to authorize use in athletic settings. The board voted on the amendment first; the amendment carried. The main motion (approval of the school physician/standing orders as amended) was then updated to reflect removal of the double-lock requirement and carried.
