Newton County to pursue near-term text fixes to comprehensive plan, defer map changes

The Newton County Board of Commissioners’ work session on April 21 focused on a proposal to pursue near-term ‘‘priority 1’’ text amendments to the county comprehensive plan while postponing major map boundary changes for a later, full update. Eva Kennedy, executive director of the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission, told the board the text work would clean up character-area descriptions and the lists of zoning districts allowed in each area.

Kennedy said the two-step approach was deliberate: ‘‘We recommend that you consider doing [map changes] as part of this priority 2 because, again, that'll really inherently work well within that whole update that you're gonna be doing,’’ adding that the full comprehensive-plan update is due in June 2028. Staff confirmed the county will begin the major update process in August. Commissioner Long emphasized the need to preserve neighborhood uniqueness and make sure the appendix and maps match citizen input from prior town halls.
