District outlines AI policy, screen-time limits and tightened cybersecurity

The Indian Hill Exempted Village School District’s director of innovation and technology, Mark Richardson, told the board the district will complete classroom display installations this summer, add new Chromebooks and stand up a new data warehouse to support teachers.
“We have a new data warehouse coming up that will be very helpful for our teachers,” Richardson said. He described a summer plan that includes a state-funded high-school tech intern and ongoing professional learning for teachers on artificial intelligence tools.
Richardson said the district has adopted an assignment-level “stoplight” approach in policy to govern classroom AI use: green assignments may permit AI, red assignments do not. “There is an academic integrity connection… AI cheating is treated the same as any other cheating,” he said, describing the policy’s link to academic consequences.
The presentation included recent district screen-time measures, drawn from three months of activity: the primary school averaged about 17 minutes a day (4% of instructional time), the elementary about 57 minutes a day, and middle and high schools roughly an hour per day (about 19%). Richardson highlighted classroom examples of high-impact technology use, such as 4th-grade endangered-animal research projects and programmable robots (Spheros).
On cybersecurity, Richardson summarized tools and safeguards in place: content filtering through Securly, classroom monitoring via GoGuardian, a Securely Home option for parents to review device activity, two-factor authentication, long complex passwords, encryption of district device drives, monthly phishing training, and an incident-response plan aligned to NIST standards. He said the district works with external cybersecurity partners and has completed a business-practices certification in the Trusted Learning Environment program.
The superintendent and board members proposed sending a summary email to families and holding an in-person technology and safety session for the community in late September or early October to explain the district’s approach to AI and screen time.
