Lake County commissioners refine strategic priorities; code audit and fiscal diversification highlighted

At a June 23 work session, Lake County commissioners and staff worked through a draft strategic priorities document intended to guide budgeting and staff workplans. Commissioners asked staff to broaden language about external funding so it applies to grants, partners and contractors (rather than naming only nonprofits), citing prior audit findings and a desire for scopes of work and performance expectations when county funds are passed through.

Members also proposed inclusion of a land‑development code audit focused on affordability and efficiency. Staff cautioned the board that a comprehensive code overhaul is a major undertaking that usually requires third‑party consultants and detailed budgeting; commissioners asked staff to scope the audit work and estimate costs to include in upcoming budget cycles. The board discussed making the strategic priorities explicit about the county’s role in policy advocacy and recommended a statement linking the document to the community’s comprehensive plan so that staff priorities and community values stay aligned.

A separate line of discussion focused on fiscal resilience: commissioners urged work on revenue diversification and reducing reliance on Climax (mining) receipts for day‑to‑day operations. Staff said they would develop options for evaluation, consult with regional partners, and return with financial analyses and implementation steps tied to budget timelines.
