Board discusses gate logs, interim lake management and fishing access for retention structures

The Roscommon County Board added "gate logs" to unfinished business and discussed who should be authorized to operate lake gates and install boards on lake structures while the county seeks a permanent lake manager. Commissioners and staff agreed that maintenance staff could perform interim operations provided there is documentation (an email request) and training on the procedure.

"I would say absolutely," a county staff member said when asked if maintenance could be assigned interim gate duties. Commissioners stressed the need for an auditable process and discussed the timing for advertising a lake-manager position and the potential role of the incoming drain/water-resources commissioner.

Public comment raised access concerns tied to a new water-retention structure. Richfield Township Supervisor Ray Lazinski asked the county to include fishing access where feasible, saying property owners historically have allowed access and that residents depend on the structure as one of the few shore-access points. Commissioners noted liability and safety concerns, ADA compliance issues, and that some access paths are on private property — all factors the board will consider in follow-up lake-level or lake-manager meetings.

The board agreed to continue the gate-log and lake-access conversation at the lake-level meeting and to provide staff guidance in the interim.
