Granton referendum rejected 543–148; district plans committee, loan and budget options

The Granton Area School District reported the referendum did not pass after the official canvass: 148 votes in favor and 543 opposed, District Administrator Nancy Popp told the board April 20. Popp said the community’s decision requires the district to quickly consider next steps including forming a planning committee and examining financing options such as a state trust fund loan.
Popp outlined next actions: reopen communications with neighboring districts, prepare a potential new referendum question, and draw up a budget that includes proposed cuts for the coming school year. She invited staff, students, parents and community members to join a committee; the first meeting is planned for April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the library.
Popp told the board operations will continue next year “as normally as possible” while the district develops options. The board did not take immediate budget action at the meeting but discussed the need to evaluate insurance and contract items as part of budget planning.
