Amy said the district ended the previous year with 86 students in special education compared with 70 in the prior September, and the rise informed the decision to add one more special-education teacher. "We already have 1 student going out of district for services. We make sure we're talking about having 2, so that would be double the price," Amy told the board.
Board members did not vote separately on staffing at the hearing; those positions are incorporated into the adopted budget and will be managed by district administration as the school year begins.
