Board weighs replacing wheelchair-lift bus with wheelchair-accessible van; purchase deferred until state bidding timeline

The superintendent outlined a proposal to replace the district's wheelchair-lift yellow bus with a wheelchair-accessible van that the district could depreciate and that would allow non-CDL staff to drive routes when needed. "This particular one would be instead of ordering another yellow bus with the wheelchair lift, we would order this van with the wheelchair lift," the superintendent said, adding the van could be used for multiple purposes and ease driver shortages.

The superintendent clarified depreciation reimbursement applies only to new purchases: "Only purchasing new," he said when asked if existing vans could be depreciated. Board members also noted that state bidding and ordering timelines mean the district cannot place orders until Sept. 1, so the board put immediate purchase decisions on hold pending official guidance and pricing.
