Historic Preservation Board approves forwarding demolition request for 607 6th Street

The Historic Preservation Board voted to forward a demolition request for the residence at 607 6th Street after staff reported that a cultural resource survey found the property had lost key historic-material features and is unlikely to qualify for state or national listing.

Bridal Boland, a staff member who presented the survey, said the building "no longer retains sufficient character defining features to convey its original architectural character" and that "staff does not oppose the demolition request." Boland explained the survey recommended the property is not eligible for listing on the National Register predominantly due to loss of historical integrity, though it may meet the minimum threshold for a local landmark designation.

Board members asked whether neighborhood meetings and public notices had occurred; staff said two neighborhood meetings were held with little public attendance. After a brief deliberation a motion to approve the recommendation to proceed with demolition was made, seconded and approved by roll call. The clerk recorded affirmative votes during the roll call, and the board moved on to the next agenda item.

The action is procedural: forwarding or approving the demolition review so Town Council can take final action. The board noted relocation was not considered a feasible preservation alternative given the documented loss of integrity and that the applicant did not claim economic hardship in the record.
