PSJA board elects Ricardo Rodriguez president in 5–1 vote; one trustee abstains

The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District Board of Education elected Ricardo Rodriguez as board president for the 2025–2026 year during its Oct. 27 regular meeting at PSJA Early College High School. Trustees also named Yolanda Castillo vice-president and Ramona Barron secretary; the assistant secretary position was left vacant.

Trustee Carlos G. Villegas Jr. moved the slate and Ricardo Rodriguez seconded the motion. Voting in favor were Villegas, Rodriguez, Diana Y. Serna, Ramona Barron and Yolanda Castillo. Trustee Griselda Quintanilla voted against the motion and Trustee Cynthia A. Gutierrez abstained; the motion carried. The vote followed an extended discussion about the accuracy of previously tabled minutes.

Trustee Griselda Quintanilla explained why she had previously requested that June minutes be tabled, saying "the wording, the verbiage, everything that was in those minutes was not entirely accurate," and citing typographical errors and what she described as an incorrect inclusion of a personnel reassignment. Quintanilla asked administration to correct the record and have the board secretary review the minutes for accuracy before finalization.

Outgoing board president Diana Y. Serna was presented a plaque recognizing her 2024–2025 service. Board attorney Eden Ramirez confirmed that formal personnel and grievance matters were later discussed in executive session and that no action was taken on those closed items when the board returned to open session.
