Low participation forces changes to girls lacrosse; sailing capacity and budget constraints questioned
Summary
Board discussed low girls lacrosse enrollment (9 players, no designated goalie) and plans to shift to intramurals or scrimmages; board and public asked whether funds from canceled programs can be reallocated to cover sailing, where interest outstripped budgeted seats.

Administrators said the middle-school girls lacrosse team began the season with only nine players (the minimum to compete) and no designated goalie; because the roster fell short of a typical complement they will likely cancel the competitive season and offer intramural options and coach-led clinics to continue skill development.
"The team began the season with the minimum 9 players required to compete, and no designated goalie," the superintendent said, adding that the district and coaches will continue practices and that the coach remains committed and will be paid under the arrangements discussed.
Board members and residents raised questions about reallocating funds from teams that do not run to programs with demonstrated student interest, particularly sailing, where roughly 13 students enrolled and 18 expressed interest. A parent asked whether the district could pivot funds mid-year to cover additional sailing seats instead of holding tryouts driven by current budget constraints.
Administrators said reallocation is possible in principle but is subject to program logistics, placement constraints (boats, equipment capacity), and budget line-item limitations. They committed to reporting back with a count of students impacted and a status update at the next board meeting.
