Shelby County proclaims April as Fair Housing and recognizes Donate Life Month

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners on April 13 passed resolutions recognizing April 2026 as Fair Housing Month and designating April 10 as Blue and Green Day in support of National Donate Life Month.

Commissioner Michael Whaley introduced the Donate Life resolution noting the national shortage of organs and tissues and the importance of registration. Dr. Tulisa Franklin of the Mid South Transplant Foundation, who identified herself to the commission, thanked commissioners and urged residents to register as organ and tissue donors: “I suggest that if you would want to really give back, go to www.midsouthtransplant.org and say yes to organ and tissue donation,” she said.

Chairwoman and commissioners also approved a special resolution acknowledging the Fair Housing Act’s role in prohibiting housing discrimination and declaring the county’s commitment to equitable housing opportunities. Kathy Anderson, president‑elect of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors, accepted the proclamation and said the association’s members work daily to promote fair housing in the community.

Both items were placed on the consent agenda and approved without roll‑call opposition. The resolutions do not create new programs or funding but serve as formal recognition and public expression of priorities by the commission.
