Assessor’s office outlines grievance day, filing window and support for Peekskill property owners

Paula Alicia, the assessment clerk, told the Common Council that Peekskill’s grievance process begins when the tentative assessment roll is published on June 1 and runs through grievance day on June 16. She said property owners who believe their assessments are too high may file a grievance application at no cost and may request a hearing before the Board of Assessment Review on June 16.

"Grievance day is when the Board of Assessment Review meets to hear concerns about property assessments," Alicia said, and urged owners to bring supporting information such as an appraisal or comparable sales. She also noted that the tentative roll will be available at the assessor’s office and on the city website and provided the assessor’s office number: (914) 734-4190.

Council members responded with appreciation for the assessor's office outreach; one councilor described an instance where a constituent's elderly parent received in-person help completing senior tax paperwork. The presentation concluded with an offer from staff to update a public flyer and post details on social media to increase awareness.

City officials said the grievance timeline and supporting materials aim to make the review process straightforward and to encourage early contact with staff before filing formal appeals. The council did not take further action on the item during the meeting.
