Nottoway board approves VDOT secondary 6-year plan, schedules projects for future funding

The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 21 to approve the Virginia Department of Transportations Secondary Six-Year Plan for fiscal years 2027 through 2032 and the related FY2027 construction priority list.

Aaron French, assistant resident engineer for VDOT, told the board the meeting was a preliminary work session to identify projects for the next planning cycle and recommended adding Harper Road to the rural rustic program because of steep grades and repeated maintenance after heavy rains. "My recommendation to add to the plan for next year is going to be Harper Road," French said. He also reported that recent traffic counts showed Clark Road now qualifies for rural-rustic funding.

During the public hearing residents raised concerns about construction traffic from planned solar projects that could use Harper Road for site access. The board heard from a Clark Road resident who asked for chip-and-seal work to address dust and school-bus access; VDOT said Clark Road would be included in next years draft plan but that, without reprioritization, full funding and construction for some projects remain in later years. The board approved the plan on a motion by a supervisor and then adopted a resolution citing sections 33.2-3358 and 33.2-3331 of the Code of Virginia to formalize the action.

The VDOT presentation also included resurfacing updates, added safety markings at a problem intersection, and a speed-study recommendation to set a short posted segment near a major entrance to 30 mph to address access-management concerns. The board will receive the formal draft plan in March of the next planning cycle and staff said it will program Clark Road into that draft.
