Students showcase reading and science events; district honors staff

At the May 12 meeting the board heard student and school reports highlighting family engagement and student achievement.
Gib Olinger principal Sarah Ensunsa described an elementary program in which students read The Wild Robot (one chapter a week from February through early May), each student received a copy to keep, and 133 students attended a PTO-sponsored drive-in showing of the book’s movie adaptation. Science Night at Gib Olinger featured 26 stations and attracted over 650 attendees. The superintendent also announced IMESD Crystal Apple Award winners — Tiffany Gaines (Lead Secretary at McLoughlin High School), Isidra Contreras (Paraprofessional at Gib Olinger Elementary), Marianne Smith (Art Teacher at McLoughlin High School) and Xiomara Garcia (Elementary Dual Language Teacher) — and noted Superintendent Duff received a regional Crystal Apple Leadership Award.
Superintendent Duff also noted extracurricular successes: the FFA dairy judging team won first at state and will advance to nationals, and the choir placed third at state.
