Jackson County extends moratorium on high-density computing facilities through Aug. 4, 2027

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to extend a temporary moratorium on applications for high-density computing and data processing facilities in unincorporated Jackson County until Aug. 4, 2027. The board approved the resolution during its regular meeting after staff described the extension as necessary to allow time for ordinance drafting, technical input and public hearings.

"The proposed moratorium will remain in effect until 08/04/2027 unless it is terminated earlier upon adoption of the county's high density computing facility regulation," Becca Fuha, the county zoning administrator, said as she explained staff's recommendation. Fuha told the board the moratorium is not intended to permanently prohibit such facilities but to preserve the county's ability to complete a "thoughtful and legally defensible" ordinance before an application arrives.

Board members asked for the staff materials to be circulated; Fuha said she would send the information to board members. After brief discussion of pros and cons, a motion to extend the moratorium was made and carried. The resolution was identified in discussion as Resolution 1205-08-04-2026; the board recorded the motion and approved the extension by voice vote, with the meeting chair announcing the motion carries.

The extension gives the county time to finish ordinance review, obtain legal and technical input, complete the required public hearing process and make a final decision without being pressured by a pending application, according to Fuha's presentation.
