The Big Spring School District board voted Oct. 20 to abolish its policy committee and return policy drafting responsibilities to the administration, citing the need for a more consistent review schedule.
"I feel as policy committee should be abolished and gotten rid of, and I hope you guys really do consider that," a public commenter told the board during the meeting. The motion to dissolve the committee, made from the floor and seconded, drew several speakers on both sides before the chair announced the result. Board President Mr. Lovell declared the motion carried; he said administration will work with the solicitor and bring policies back on a three-year rotating schedule to ensure timely review.
Supporters of the committee pushed back in debate, with the committee chair saying the group intentionally brought rough drafts to public meetings so community members could shape policies early. "This committee is dissolved," the committee chair said in a forceful defense of the committee’s purpose, warning that eliminating the forum would reduce transparency. Despite those remarks, the board recorded a majority vote in favor of abolition and instructed staff to continue policy work under the new schedule.
