Dozens of parents, former athletes and community volunteers addressed the Nekoosa School Board during public comment to protest the recent termination of Scott and Brooke Thurber from the district’s wrestling program.
Multiple speakers described long records of service and program success under the Thurbers. One parent read a letter signed "Elizabeth Mickey Freeman" calling the firings "very, very unprofessional" and asking, "How could this success be a cause to be fired?" Another commenter said the girls’ program had grown under Brooke Thurber and that participation has already fallen since her departure.
Scott Thurber spoke directly to the board, listing coaching achievements including conference champions, state qualifiers and national coaching-clinic participation, and thanked supporters who have contacted him after the dismissal. Several parents said the decision was made without sufficient explanation or an opportunity for the coaches to respond.
Speakers asked the board to review the decision and provide more information to the community. The board did not provide detailed personnel information during the public comment period; later in the meeting the chair moved to adjourn into closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters related to the wrestling program.
