Major Francisco Gonzales Rodriguez, senior army instructor for the JROTC program, asked the board to permit and support a campus 'Field of Honor' 9/11 remembrance featuring a visual display of 2,977 American flags — one for each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001 — and the board approved the request. "We are organizing a school wide and community ... display of 2,977 American flags planted on the school lawn, 1 representing each life lost on 09/11/2001," Major Gonzales Rodriguez said as he requested flag donations and district support.
Board members moved and seconded a motion to allow the event; the chair said the board would support the program and help where requested during the school year. The superintendent and staff offered logistical support and thanked the cadets for organizing a service‑learning opportunity that emphasizes service and remembrance.
