Board approves server replacement to extend camera footage retention to 30 days
Summary
The board approved a server‑replacement resolution to increase district video footage retention from about 14 days to 30 days, with staff saying 30 days is the recommended balance between investigative needs and server costs and that access will remain tightly restricted.

The Board authorized a server‑replacement contract (to be procured through BOCES) to expand video retention from roughly 14 days to a recommended 30 days. Staff explained the district had reduced retention as cameras were added and said the new servers will allow a 30‑day window for storing footage while keeping system access limited to authorized personnel.
"Right now, we are down to 14 days, because we have added so many video cameras," a district staff member said. "So by enhancing our servers, and putting it through BOCES, we are allowing for a 30 day window of saving video footage." Staff added that retention beyond 30 days would greatly increase server costs and that privacy protections would be maintained by restricting access to footage.
The board voted in favor of the resolution; discussion noted the tradeoff between investigative needs and storage costs and the recommendation from IT that 30 days is an appropriate operational standard.
