Commissioners consider opioid wraparound coordinator after noting county service gaps

Commissioners discussed the county's opioid wraparound efforts and the need for better centralized information and coordination for residents seeking help. One commissioner argued the county currently lacks a single, public place to direct people seeking opioid-related assistance and proposed hiring a coordinator to assemble resources, coordinate services between jail reentry and community providers and track outcomes.

"We have nothing in this county that someone that needs help can go to and find help," the commissioner said, urging a coordinator role that would compile available services, assist with housing and case management, and act as a point of contact for residents and agencies. Other commissioners urged caution: several supported hearing presentations from organizations with established wraparound models and case studies (some offered through MAC or regional partners) before creating a permanent, funded position. They also emphasized that grant management and sustainability must be part of any plan—getting grants is not only about writing proposals but administering funded programs over time.

The board asked staff to arrange presentations by experienced groups and to bring detailed program designs, budgets and job descriptions back to the board before taking further hiring action.
