Superintendent Brad Bixler told the Helix School Board that the 2025-26 school year has started well, with enrollment reported at 188 students in his initial remarks and later updated to 186 in district enrollment tables. Bixler said all staff positions were filled and praised recent student activities, including the Helix band's appearance in the Westward Ho! Parade.
Bixler summarized ongoing and upcoming building work: replaced sidewalks, cleaned windows, tree trimming, locker repairs, new heat pumps, new cameras, plumbing repairs, and a circulating fan repair in the practice gym. He also told trustees the district had three proposals for engineering/architectural services for seismic rehabilitation of the main gym, lobby and locker rooms and indicated the district is prepared to pick up design costs related to proposed pathways and programs.
Bixler flagged routine items for the board's attention: the Oregon Department of Education will release assessment results in the coming months and will change accountability measures; ODE and OHA require administering a student health survey this year with prior parent notification; and the district is evaluating adding a PR/media staff position and will work with athletics staff to develop a job description.
The board discussed timeline and procurement for the seismic work and later approved IMEG as the engineering vendor and accepted IMEG's proposal.
