The Helix School Board voted Oct. 8 to approve an AAOT (Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer) agreement with Blue Mountain Community College, a District packet and trustees' minutes show.
Mark Browning, BMCC president, outlined a pathway that would allow Helix freshmen and sophomores to take courses that lead to an AAOT while remaining based in Helix. Browning said the program would expand postsecondary training and options for local students; he told the board "students need every opportunity." The Superintendent, Brad Bixler, said the district would pick up program costs so the pathway would not add tuition for participating students.
Board members approved the agreement by motion (mover: Bobby Corey; seconder: Friday Bracher). The vote was recorded as carried. Trustees directed administration to finalize the agreement language and coordinate the implementation timeline with BMCC and IMESD.
The agreement formalizes pre-admission and course pathways, and aims to provide dual-credit or cohort-based instruction to reduce friction for rural students pursuing transfer degrees. The district said further operational details and course schedules will be developed with BMCC and IMESD staff before implementation this school year.
