La Center School District administrators reported a substantial jump in elementary reading benchmarks and announced a curriculum change to shore up early phonics instruction.
Presenters said the average percentage of students at reading benchmark rose from 53% in the fall to 68% in the winter — a 15 percentage‑point increase. District leaders credited work by the reading coach and paraeducators for much of the gain and noted that the K–2 curriculum contained gaps in phonics instruction.
To address those gaps, the elementary will add the UFLI phonics curriculum, which is currently being piloted. The district expects classroom‑level use across K–2 and anticipates significant primary‑reading gains by next year if the pilot is successful.
Superintendent Peter Rosenkranz added that special education students are included in the benchmark data and reiterated that improvement is a multi‑year process; no formal board votes or funding allocations were made during the workshop.
