Superintendent Susan Penrod told the Seaside School District 10 Budget Committee that managing the PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) shortfall will be among the district's most important budget-related tasks next year and that staff will need to explore options.
Penrod reviewed a prior slide titled 'What is PERS' from the April meeting and said committee members should expect detailed analysis and potential scenarios. Chair Jason Haag requested a more expansive explanation of the PERS issue for committee review but indicated the request would not prevent the committee from voting on the budget that night.
Penrod additionally noted uncertainty in federal funding streams that could affect next year's planning and reiterated the need for creative budgeting approaches to preserve critical services.
