Two high school students presented research projects to the board as part of the curriculum update. Krista Thomas described a bioinformatics study linking gene‑expression pathways to nuclear morphology in breast cancer and explained she used R and Python and open‑source databases in her analyses. "This is my first time really doing research like this and I never knew that I would like it as much as I do now," Thomas said.
Ella Copaz described transcriptomic analyses and molecular docking to identify candidate drugs for hotspot mutations in breast and ovarian cancer, and said the team recently registered for the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair with plans to pursue state‑level competition. Both students credited mentors — including Dr. McCullough and Mr. Moy — and the district's science‑research program for supporting their work.
