Edgewood ISD outlines bilingual and ESL programs, performance measures

Joseph Rodriguez, senior director of advanced academics and social services, told trustees the district offers both one-way and two-way dual-language models and an ESL pull-out model at secondary levels. He explained the district's approach to supporting emergent bilinguals across multiple campuses and listed program elements such as enrollment assistance, family engagement sessions, teacher and leader coaching, and in-class coaching supports.

Rodriguez noted the district uses state assessments (STAR, TELPAS) and other data to monitor emergent bilingual progress and acknowledged that there is work to do to raise students from beginning and intermediate ratings to advanced levels. "Our program in Edgewood ISD is a dual language one way and a dual language two way," Rodriguez said, and he emphasized the district's effort to expand parent sessions and maintain fidelity to dual-language implementation.
