Residents press Van Alstyne ISD on Open Meetings Act compliance, bond transparency and adding a soccer program

At the Oct. 20 board meeting multiple residents spoke during the public comment period on matters ranging from legal compliance to extracurricular offerings. Ryan Laing raised concerns about compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act and asked the board to produce clearer agenda language and solicit more actionable public input. Max Post, a VAISD resident who currently attends another high school, requested the district establish a soccer program, citing broad student interest and community participation; trustees did not vote on the request during the meeting. Marchelle Bell criticized the structure and transparency of a proposed bond, saying its language "is not binding, lacks transparency, public engagement, insufficient earmarking, and accountability," and urged breaking the bond into parts and creating a planning committee and project dashboard. The board directed staff to follow up on Laing's Open Meetings Act concerns and to involve Marla Butler in that follow up.

Trustees did not adopt immediate changes in response to public comments beyond the directed follow‑ups; topics raised may resurface in future agenda discussions or in directed administrative follow up.
