Motion to adopt TCI social studies curriculum fails for lack of second
Summary
A motion to adopt the TCI social studies curriculum for grades 9–12 received no second and died. Board members expressed concerns that parts of the material "appeared biased and applied a modern perspective to events that occurred more than 200 years ago," and staff will review alternative curricula.

On May 13 the Santiam Canyon School Board considered adopting the TCI social studies curriculum for grades 9–12, but the motion failed for lack of a second.
Mrs. Allison moved to accept the TCI curriculum; there was "No second. Motion dies." During discussion Mrs. Harrington said parts of the material "appeared biased and applied a modern perspective to events that occurred more than 200 years ago." Staff told the board they would review additional curriculum options, consult teachers, and consider more traditional choices such as McGraw-Hill. Ms. Jungwirth and Mr. Lazar answered board questions and noted the importance of teacher input in curriculum selection.
Board members directed staff to continue reviewing alternatives rather than adopting TCI at this meeting.
