Alicia Hanson, the Santiam Elementary representative, told the board spring assessment results showed gains for 3rd through 5th graders—about 8% in math and 9% in ELA—while science losses narrowed compared with the prior year. Hanson said the school is experimenting with a "flip" model so one teacher focuses on math and science while another handles ELA writing to guarantee daily science instruction for 5th graders.
Hanson also reviewed attendance trends and a planned intervention: starting Sept. 10 the district will pilot weekly 15-minute attendance-team meetings in which staff each check in with a small caseload of families by text or phone to improve regular attendance. "Our goal is if you look at that orange zone, the 80 to 85%, we're hoping that buttons kinda move that yellow zone in," Hanson said, describing incentives and personal outreach as part of the strategy. The elementary reported 91% attendance on the day of the meeting but an overall Sept–May average of 68.22% (compared with Oregon's average of 67.6).
