County officials express concern over firefighting and containment for lithium battery fires

Commissioners pressed staff on whether local firefighting resources could respond to lithium‑ion battery fires at storage facilities and how the ordinance would address suppression and containment.

A committee member asked whether the county had equipment or tactics to extinguish such fires. Staff and other members described industry practice that, in many cases, facilities are designed so a battery fire can be contained and allowed to burn rather than be extinguished with water, and that interior on‑site response is the responsibility of the facility owner while the county provides outside defense.

Commissioners and staff discussed that some battery incidents could produce brush fires or require outside defense, and that planning and separation measures in the ordinance are intended to isolate potential fires. Members noted local fire departments may lack specialized tools to combat certain battery fires and asked whether suppression requirements in the draft were adequate.
