School leaders reported early‑year updates at the Sept. 11 board meeting. Tim Young, principal at Columbia Vista Intermediate, said the first soccer game on the new field was a highlight and reported the final score as 5‑2 in favor of UHS. Young noted strong student engagement and compared the scene to a community moment.
Rick Cotterell, principal at Clara Brownell Middle School, reported a gas leak that prompted evacuation and praised staff: "They had a gas leak, and everyone did such a great job evacuating the building." Umatilla High School Principal Bob Lorence said the year started well with a first assembly and student participation in a class chant; seniors were rewarded with donuts.
Vice principals also reported routine safety drills and operational improvements (fire drill at CVI, phone policy compliance at UHS). These reports were informational and no board action was taken.
