Superintendent Aaron Duff told the Milton-Freewater Unified School District 7 budget committee on April 27 that the district remains in a solid financial position and does not plan to lay off staff despite declining student enrollment.
"He assured the committee the district was in a solid financial state and the district had no plan to layoff staff," the minutes state. Duff also warned that federal funding is "always unknown and changing," and said the district has been preparing for enrollment decreases and will remain watchful during budget development.
Duff framed declining enrollment as part of a statewide trend but emphasized the district's preparedness: administrators and the business office have factored enrollment scenarios into planning, he said. The committee heard this budget message before a detailed fiscal overview from the business manager.
The superintendent's assurance provides short-term personnel stability but the committee will revisit assumptions at the continuation hearing on May 18, when the budget packet will be discussed in greater detail.
