Parents of seniors brought a concern about graduation logistics to the Raton Board of Education on March 19, pressing the board to allow students to be recognized by walking forward during the diploma presentation. "Graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many students," parent Jonathon Castillo said, urging that seniors receive the traditional recognition.
President Jason Phillips acknowledged a miscommunication and clarified the ceremony will proceed in a familiar way except that no stage will be used. "Students would still walk forward and shake hands with the Board as they receive their diplomas," Phillips said. Superintendent Kristie Medina reiterated that clarification. The board did not take a formal vote on ceremony format during the meeting; the clarification was offered as the board's current plan.
