Board cites state SEG increase as budget relief, schedules possible special meeting

Raton Board of Education staff reported a state funding adjustment they said ‘‘will cover the 1% Salary Increase and the 80/20 split for employee insurance premiums,’’ and the board agreed it may need a special meeting to approve the budget ahead of the May 12 state deadline.
Raton Board of Education business staff told the board on March 19 that the State Equalization Guarantee (SEG) for the 2026–27 school year will increase and that the change will be used to address upcoming personnel and benefit costs. "The SEG for the 2026/2027 School Year will be increased by $240," Myra Baird reported, adding that the increase "will cover the 1% Salary Increase and the 80/20 split for employee insurance premiums."
Baird said the district's budget is due to the Public Education Department on May 12 and that the board might need a special meeting before that date to approve the final budget. The board approved the Financial Report, budget adjustments/transfers and the second-quarter cash report on a unanimous 5-0 vote. Board members discussed timing rather than changing benefits or salary assumptions at the meeting.
